News & Happenings
Commonwealth games in 2010 have brought numerous benefits to Delhi. Indeed, it has changed the face and fortune of Delhi, as Delhi is witnessing a lot of developmental activities in the past few months and has more to follow, till the time when Commonwealth games start. The process of development, improvement in infrastructure and revamping Delhi is under progress, at a very good pace. But, what about the sports facilities which are, perhaps, the most important aspect of the event. Well, the government has an unending list of plans at its disposal, which are being implemented and worked on. Commonwealth games village is being build on a 40-acre site near the heart of the city. The proposed village would have a large capacity of accommodating around 8,500 athletes and officials. The new as well as existing stadiums in Delhi would be used to host games like Aquatics, Athletics, Badminton, Boxing, Cycling, EAD Events, Gymnastics, Hockey, Lawn Bowls, Netball, Rugby 7s, Shooting, Squash, Table Tennis, Weightlifting and Wrestling.

Delhi has many sports complexes in and around Delhi which are being run and maintained by DDA. Sports facilities in Delhi include golf, tennis, soccer, basketball, cricket, swimming and many others. Siri Fort sport complex offers the best of facilities. Several new stadiums are coming up in Delhi which will be used in the Commonwealth games 2010. Apart from these, there are other clubs and sports complexes in different parts of the city whose membership varies from corporate membership to temporary membership.

While talking about sports in India, ignoring cricket would mean injustice to the sentiments of millions of people in India, who eat, sleep and drink cricket. Cricket deserves the accreditation it receives because the game has given India a lot of pride and fame and most importantly money. As people treat cricket as a religion in India, major corporate brands depend on cricket icons like Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar and Mahinder Singh Dhoni, for their advertising campaigns. The popularity of the game is apparent by the very fact that you go for a walk early in the morning, you find children playing cricket at every possible space available. The so called maidans (read grounds) in the city are packed with talented individuals trying their hands on the most loved and watched sport of India.

Delhi's only international venue, Firoz Shah Kotla has been the host of many historic clashes between top cricket playing nations of the world. It has had the privilege of hosting the first ever test match in the post independent India when the touring West Indies under John Goddyard visited India in 1948. The stadium also has to its name the tribute of hosting the historic clash between India and Pakistan where Anil Kumble made a world record by taking all ten wickets in an innings.

There is no denying the fact that cricket is the most popular game in India but there are other sports as well, including soccer, tennis, golf, badminton, swimming, kart racing, weightlifting and table tennis that are becoming more popular among youngsters with passing time.
