Medical facility is a vital element of a well established city and Delhi ranks among the best as far as medical facilities in India is concerned. In Delhi, there are a number of government as well as non-government organizations offering health care facilities to its citizens. Directorate of health Services (DHS), under the government of NCT of Delhi is the major agency devoted to delivering better health care services. It coordinates with other government and non-government organization (NGOs) to deliver the best medical facility in Delhi.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has very emphatically stated that "The hospital is an integral part of a social & medical organization. The function of which is to provide complete health care solution to its population, both remedial and preventive and whose outpatient services reach out to the family as well as its home environment; the hospital is also a centre for training of health workers and for the biosocial research" There are a whole eleven hospitals that are working under the DHS. These hospitals provide OPD, IPD and casualty services.

Accidents and Injuries (Trauma)

Delhi constitutes special institutions that provide emergency services in case of accidents, immediate medical care or emergency medical treatments. In case of any tragedy, you can either call Centralized Accidents and Trauma Services (CATS) or Police control room or the Ambulance. You can also take the patient to the nearest hospital or the Sushruta Trauma Center near ISBT.

Drowning

You can call fire service (101) or the Police Control Room (100) or the Centralised Ambulance or Trauma Services (1099) for help. You can take the patient to any of the hospitals mentioned above for instantaneous quality treatment.

Remember that you are not forced to disclose your identity for taking an injured person to any of the hospitals in Delhi.

The Supreme Court (SC) of India has made it compulsory for all private and government hospitals to treat each and every case of medical care regardless of the excuse of the case being medico legal. The doctor attending the patient first in such cases will accurately record the findings and provide them to the authorities as and when required

Dog Bite

If you come across a situation when a dog has bitten some one then the first thing you should do is wash the affected area with soap and water. Take the affected person to the nearest hospital for treatment. Rabies vaccination is easily available at medical stores and at all government hospitals in Delhi.

Unconsciousness

Unconsciousness is a serious condition when a patient becomes comatose due to an injury or trauma. It may also occur as a result of poisoning and other diseases like cerebral-vascular accidents, hypertension, diabetes mellitus etc. Government as well as private hospitals in Delhi are well equipped to cater any such cases. So it is sensible to take the patient to the nearest hospital for immediate care.

Heart Attack

Heart attack is a critical case which normally occurs in middle aged people where a patient feels anxiety and complains of severe pain in chest along with breathlessness, sweating, anxiety and sudden unconsciousness. Delhi has world class Cardiologic facilities with a track record of high success rate as compared to that of other countries. People from different countries visit these hospitals for treatment.

So a patient can be taken to a nearby dispensary between 8.00 AM to 2.00 PM.

Outbreak of Diseases

In case of any outbreak of a particular disease such as measles, chickenpox, dengue haemorrhagic fever, cholera, jaundice, etc., you can report to the same to the District Nodal Officers of the area or to the nearest healthcare. For dengue hemorrhagic fever, one can also contact the National Institute of Communicable Diseases at 22, Shamnath Marg directly. There is a control room for such outbreaks of diseases under the Directorate of Health Services. One can call these control rooms on 3722187 and 7179281 at any time of the day.

Tuberculosis

Free service and treatment for tuberculosis is available at DOTS centers in different dispensaries within the city.
