East Delhi is located on the eastern bank of Yamuna River and this part of the city is also called "Trans Yamuna Area". East Delhi is surrounded by some parts of U.P, which includes Noida and Ghaziabad.
According to the census of 2001, the population of East Delhi was 1.448770 million. If East Delhi lies on the other side of Yamuna River it does not mean that it has a culture and tradition different from that of other arts of the city. Perhaps its culture, tradition and lifestyle are almost the same as that of New Delhi. We find people belonging to all religions and major festivals are celebrated here with the same verve and zeal.
East Delhi has been successful in accommodating large population of outsiders belonging to different parts of the country. This is the major reason why Delhi and other parts of Delhi have by and large a cosmopolitan culture. This is very vivid from the fact that Mayur Vihar Phase-III has a rich population of South Indians, while Mayur Vihar Phase I and Phase II is a small home to Bengalis and Christians. Other areas of East Delhi such as Seelumpur have a good number of Muslims and there are places like Geeta Colony which is dominated by Sikhs.
The transportation facilities both (public and private) to and from East Delhi to other parts of the city are well equipped with buses and auto rickshaw plying to all parts of the city. East Delhi is also one of the busiest and heavily populated areas of Delhi with places like Vikas Marg, Preet Vihar and Shahadra always vulnerable to traffic jams.
Traffic problems in some parts of East Delhi have been reduced to a great degree with the arrival of Delhi Metro which runs through a part of East Delhi and terminates at Shahadra.
Major Sub Divisions in East Delhi are: Preet Vihar, Vivek Vihar, Shahdara, Mayur Vihar, Patparganj and Lakshmi Nagar.
