Delhi, the capital of India, is situated in northern India and stands on the west bank of Yamuna River bounded by Uttar Pardesh on the north and by Haryana on the west and south. Delhi is spread over an area of 1483 sq. kilometers, 216 meters above sea level and has a population of around 14 million. The city also holds historical importance for the fact that it has been the home to Mugal Empire, in the past.
A famous poet Mirza Galib, puts it like this, "The world is body and Delhi its soul". Apart from its historical importance, Delhi also happens to be the political center of India, where every political activity in the country has its roots in Delhi, with important political houses like parliament and Rashtrapati Bhawan existing here.
As per the studies and sources, the name Delhi originated from the Persian word Dahleez (threshold or frontier) or from the name of a Mauryan king, Raja Dhillu. Another possible etymology is the city's real name Dhillika.
The people of Delhi proudly call themselves as "Delhi-ites". A lot of pride and glory is associated with the word (Delhi), itself. Delhi is the fifth most populated urban area in world with satellite towns like Faridabad, Gurgaon and Noida combining with it to form NCR, called the National Capital Region.
NCR was developed because Delhi needed room to expand and swallow the burden of increasing growth and development in the region. Delhi, with its space constraint, not being able to fulfill the requirement of this very demand, sought the potential of neighboring suburbs like Noida and Gurgaon. Today, Noida and Gurgaon are closely associated with Delhi and the flawless infrastructure makes the traveling among these cities an easy ride.
The history speaks for significant contributions of Delhi towards both political and economical development of India, as a country which has left its mark on the global map today. Delhi has the most sparkling history among other prominent cities in India. Study from the Archaeological Survey of India reveals that Delhi was the capital of seven empires in Indian history and has over 60, 0000 recognized monuments built over several millennia.
Apart from being the political capital of India, Delhi is also a central administrative unit of government of India. Major ministries of Indian government are situated in Delhi only. The parliament of India - the emblem of Indian democracy – exists here, in Delhi only. All the major government offices and departments are also located in Delhi. In other words, it is the power house of Indian democracy which rules the nation.
Delhi has the advantage of its cosmopolitan society where one can find people belonging to different parts of the country be it southern or eastern India. This makes the city very multi linguistic and multi cultured. Being the capital of the world's largest democracy, Delhi has embassies of over 160 countries, from all across the globe.
Over the last decade or so, it is also become the major Information Technology destination of India. According to recent reports, Delhi NCR has accounted for maximum software export from India. IT and ITES have recognized their place in Delhi and NCR, where the infrastructure provides favorable environment to make the industry prosper like never before. All chief multinationals companies (MNCs) like IBM, Microsoft, Google, Sony, etc have their development centers here, in Delhi and NCR.
Delhi is the representation of old as well as new India, an India which is growing at a rapid rate and catching up with the ever increasing demands of global business.
Our late Prime Minister, Jawahar Lal Nehru, proudly said, "Delhi is the symbol of old India and new? Even the stones here whisper to our ears of the ages of long ago and the air we breathe is full of the dust and fragrances of the past, as also of the fresh and piercing winds of the present."
